Pittsburgh, Pa. – Strong thunderstorms are expected to sweep through western Pennsylvania Monday evening, bringing 60 mph wind gusts, hail, and the potential for power outages across 19 counties.
According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch (No. 401) is in effect until 10 p.m. EDT for Allegheny, Erie, Butler, Washington, and surrounding counties. The storms may down trees and power lines, particularly along I-79 and I-80 corridors.
Residents in Pittsburgh, Erie, and Butler should prepare for rapid weather changes, localized flooding, and possible lightning-related delays. Emergency officials recommend securing outdoor furniture, charging devices, and avoiding travel during heavy downpours.
The strongest storms are expected to track northeast between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., with the most intense cells capable of producing quarter-size hail. Similar systems last June left thousands without power and caused tree damage from Crawford to McKean counties.
Drivers are urged to use caution on U.S. Route 19 and other rural roads where visibility could drop sharply.
Severe weather threats continue into the evening, and additional warnings may follow. Residents should monitor local alerts and have multiple ways to receive updates.
