Wellsboro, Pa. – Flash flooding could threaten parts of north-central Pennsylvania this evening as slow-moving storms dump up to 2 inches of rain on already saturated ground.
According to the National Weather Service in State College, a Flood Watch is in effect from 2 p.m. Tuesday through Wednesday morning for Tioga, Northern Lycoming, and Sullivan counties. Forecasters warn that showers and thunderstorms will intensify later today, bringing the potential for excessive runoff and flooding of creeks, streams, and low-lying areas.
Communities including Wellsboro, Mansfield, Laporte, and Trout Run should prepare for localized street flooding and poor drainage. Residents living near Pine Creek, Lycoming Creek, and other flood-prone waterways should monitor conditions closely and be ready to move to higher ground if warnings are issued.
Drivers are urged to avoid water-covered roads and remain alert for road closures, particularly in rural areas where flash flooding can develop rapidly. Emergency crews may respond to rising water in basements and along backroads tonight.
The threat continues until at least 8 a.m. Wednesday, with additional alerts possible depending on storm development.
