Erie, PA – Residents in Erie and Crawford counties are preparing for a significant lake-effect snow event that could bring up to two feet of snow through Sunday evening. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday.
According to the NWS, snowfall rates could reach 2 inches per hour at times, especially from early Friday morning through the weekend. Gusty winds up to 35 mph are expected to cause blowing snow, further reducing visibility and complicating travel.
Officials warn that road conditions will likely be treacherous during peak snow bands, with the Friday morning and evening commutes expected to be especially hazardous. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has urged drivers to delay unnecessary travel and to monitor road conditions through its 511PA platform.
Residents are advised to keep emergency supplies, including flashlights, food, and water, in their vehicles if travel is unavoidable. The NWS also emphasized the unpredictable nature of lake-effect snow, noting that weather conditions can vary significantly over short distances.
Travelers and residents are encouraged to stay updated on the latest forecasts and prepare for potential disruptions throughout the weekend.
