Amarillo, Texas – Heavy rain and ongoing storms will keep flash flooding a concern across the Texas Panhandle through Saturday night, especially in areas already soaked earlier today.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a marginal flash flood risk remains through 11 p.m. Saturday, with the greatest chance between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. Areas from Amarillo and Dumas to Pampa and Wheeler could see 1 to 2 inches of rain per hour during peak storms, raising the risk of water-covered roads and low-lying flooding.
Travel on highways including U.S. Route 60 near Canadian and I-40 west of Amarillo could be hazardous as runoff from heavy showers causes pooling on roadways. Local emergency managers urge residents in flood-prone spots to avoid driving through water, even if it looks shallow. Flash flooding may quickly impact rural county roads as well as urban streets.
Residents should monitor alerts and be ready to move to higher ground if necessary. Power outages and lightning strikes are also possible during stronger storms this afternoon and evening.
The flash flood threat could extend into early Sunday if additional rounds of rain develop overnight. Stay tuned for updated watches or warnings later today.
