Paducah, Kentucky – Spring storms and surging river levels could turn dangerous this weekend as strong winds, heavy rain, and thunderstorm threats return across western Kentucky. Travel on I-24 and other regional routes near Paducah could be affected by flooding and downed limbs beginning Saturday and lasting through at least Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a Flood Warning remains in effect through 10:16 a.m. Tuesday, with several rivers still at moderate to major flood stage. On Saturday, rain chances rise sharply, with a 40% chance of thunderstorms by afternoon and stronger storms possible overnight. Winds may gust up to 35 mph, especially in exposed and elevated areas.

Sunday brings the highest storm risk. The NWS highlights severe thunderstorms possible Sunday afternoon into evening, especially from Perryville, Missouri to Fairfield, Illinois, with localized flash flooding likely over far northwest portions of the Quad State region. Spotters may be needed from Friday night through Sunday night.

Strong southerly winds, saturated soils, and already-elevated river levels mean flash flooding could occur rapidly, particularly near creeks and low-lying roads. Residents should avoid non-essential travel during storms, monitor weather alerts, and keep emergency kits ready in case of power outages.
