Medford, OR – The Pacific Northwest is preparing for severe weather starting Sunday night, with strong winds, heavy rain, and significant mountain snow expected. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Medford has issued warnings, urging residents and travelers to monitor the forecast closely and prepare for potentially hazardous conditions.
The storm is forecasted to bring gusts reaching 35-45 mph, especially over high terrain, with gusts topping 50 mph along exposed coastlines. According to the NWS, snow levels will drop to 4,500 feet, with up to 12 inches of snow possible in higher elevations. These conditions may make travel difficult in mountainous areas, particularly in the Cascades, where snowfall above 5,000 feet could impact roads.
Heavy rainfall of up to 1.5 inches along the coast and 0.5 inches inland could lead to slick roadways, though river flooding is not expected. The NWS advises securing loose items, adjusting travel plans if necessary, and exercising caution on the roads, especially in areas prone to strong winds or snow.
Stay tuned to local forecasts and prepare for rapid changes in weather conditions as the storm moves through early next week.
