Springfield, Missouri – A line of strong to severe thunderstorms is expected to move into southwest Missouri within hours, bringing damaging winds that could impact travel and power through tonight.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, storms will develop this evening and track east across the region, with the primary threat being wind gusts up to 70 mph. These winds could down tree limbs and power lines, especially along the I-44 corridor from Joplin through Springfield to Rolla.
Quarter-size hail is also possible, along with a low risk for a few brief tornadoes embedded within the line. Heavy rainfall may lead to localized flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and places with poor drainage.
Communities including Branson, Lebanon, and West Plains fall within the risk zone, with storms expected to intensify after sunset and continue into the overnight hours. Visibility may drop rapidly during heavier downpours, making travel hazardous.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm activity, and ensure multiple ways to receive warnings.
Storms are expected to weaken late tonight, but additional alerts may be issued as the system moves east.
