Springfield, Missouri – Rivers and low-water crossings across southwest Missouri could rise quickly over the next several days as repeated rounds of rain target the Ozarks through mid-March.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, little change in the overall weather pattern is expected, with additional waves of rainfall moving through the region through at least Wednesday and likely beyond. This rain falls on top of already saturated ground from earlier systems, increasing the risk of localized flooding.

The above-normal rainfall outlook covers much of southern Missouri, including Springfield, Branson, Joplin and West Plains. Creeks, streams and flood-prone roadways such as low-water crossings in Greene, Christian and Jasper counties could see water issues if heavier bands set up over the same areas.

Forecasters are also monitoring the potential for thunderstorms, with some storms possibly turning strong to severe depending on instability and wind shear. Exact timing and placement of the heaviest rain remains uncertain, but emergency managers urge residents to begin preparing now.

Drivers should never cross water-covered roads and should monitor MoDOT’s traveler map for closures. More updates are expected as rainfall totals become clearer and any flood watches are issued later this week.
