Springfield, MO – A sharp November chill grips the Ozarks this morning as clear skies and calm winds set the stage for a hard freeze across southeast Kansas and southwest to central Missouri. The National Weather Service in Springfield has issued a Freeze Warning from 1 AM CDT to 8 AM CST Sunday, marking one of the coldest starts of the fall season so far.

Temperatures are expected to dip as low as 28°F, cold enough to end the growing season for much of the region. Communities from Joplin and Springfield east to Rolla and south toward Branson and West Plains will feel the brunt of this early November cold snap. Areas of frost and ice crystals may form on windshields and lawns by dawn, while sheltered valleys could see even lower readings.

Residents should cover or bring indoors any remaining potted plants, and consider wrapping exposed outdoor pipes or faucets to prevent freeze damage. Farmers and gardeners can expect tender vegetation to be lost where protection isn’t provided.

While Sunday morning brings the freeze, the day itself will be clear and seasonably cool, with afternoon highs rebounding into the mid-50s. Sunshine continues into Monday before clouds and light showers return midweek.

Travelers along I-44, US-60, and I-49 can expect crisp, frosty morning conditions but no major travel impacts beyond icy windshields.

After this freeze, temperatures will gradually moderate — but the message is clear: winter’s first true chill has arrived in the Ozarks.
