Pendleton, OR – A significant winter storm is set to impact the Oregon Cascades, bringing heavy snowfall and hazardous travel conditions through Saturday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Pendleton and Portland, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 p.m. Thursday for areas above 4,000 feet, including La Pine, Sunriver, Camp Sherman, and Sisters. Snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are expected. Additionally, a Winter Storm Watch is in place from late Thursday night through Saturday afternoon, with potential snowfall of 8 to 16 inches above 4,000 feet and 2 to 4 inches at lower elevations.

Further south, the Cascades of Marion, Linn, and Lane counties—including Santiam Pass, Willamette Pass, and McKenzie Pass—are also under a Winter Storm Warning until Thursday evening, with additional snowfall of 4 to 8 inches. A Winter Storm Watch follows, predicting 1 to 2 feet of snow through Saturday, with wind gusts reaching 40 mph.

Travel conditions will be extremely dangerous, particularly on US-20 over Santiam Pass and other mountain passes. Motorists are advised to delay travel if possible or use extreme caution. Winter emergency kits, including flashlights, blankets, and tire chains, are strongly recommended.

Residents should monitor updates from the NWS and prepare for potential disruptions. Check road conditions before traveling and avoid backcountry recreation during this period.
