Portland, OR – A significant winter storm continues to impact the Hood River Valley and surrounding areas, bringing heavy snow and freezing temperatures. Residents should prepare for another 2-6 inches of snow overnight, with accumulations complicating post-Christmas travel plans.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Portland, the Winter Storm Warning will remain in effect until 5 a.m. Friday. Six inches of snow have already fallen in areas like Parkdale, with more expected as temperatures hover near freezing. By early Friday, precipitation is expected to transition into rain, reducing snow risks but potentially creating slushy, hazardous conditions on local roads.

The storm also brings a heightened avalanche danger to nearby mountain passes, including areas around Mount Hood. The Northwest Avalanche Center warns that steep slopes and heavy snowpack could result in dangerous slides through Thursday evening. Travelers are advised to avoid avalanche-prone areas and reconsider plans requiring travel along affected highways.

Looking ahead, rain will dominate Portland’s forecast through the weekend. Winds reaching up to 34 mph are expected overnight, tapering off by Friday afternoon. Highs will reach the low 50s Friday and Saturday, while steady rainfall could cause minor urban flooding in low-lying areas.

Residents should monitor weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas. Those planning weekend trips are encouraged to check road conditions and pack emergency supplies, including blankets, food, and water, for longer journeys.

Five-Day Forecast:

Friday: Showers, highs near 52°F, winds easing.

Saturday: Rain, highs near 52°F.

Sunday: Cloudy, occasional showers, highs near 49°F.

Monday: Light rain, highs in the upper 40s.

Tuesday: Clearing skies, cooler, highs near 46°F.
