Medford, Oregon – Oregon’s first major heatwave of the season will grip the Rogue Valley this weekend, with temperatures in Medford expected to soar to 99°F Saturday and Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Medford, extreme heat will build steadily through Friday before peaking this weekend. With back-to-back days near 100°F and overnight lows remaining in the mid-60s, heat stress may accumulate quickly—especially for vulnerable groups without air conditioning. Light winds and cloudless skies will offer no relief as temperatures climb sharply after 11 a.m.

Health officials urge residents to avoid outdoor activity during peak heat hours, typically from 1 to 6 p.m., and to use cooling centers if needed. Hydration, shaded rest, and checking on elderly neighbors are essential. Roadways like I-5 and Highway 62 may become dangerously hot, especially for pets and anyone without adequate vehicle cooling.

This prolonged heat arrives earlier than usual for southern Oregon, echoing patterns seen during wildfire seasons in 2021 and 2022. While no Red Flag Warnings are currently in effect, low humidity and dry fuels raise concern for fire managers across Jackson County.
