Medford, Oregon – Thunderstorms are expected to develop Monday afternoon and spread across southern Oregon, bringing dangerous lightning and strong winds that could impact travel and outdoor plans from Medford to the Cascades.
According to the National Weather Service in Medford, the storm system is tracking northeast from northern California and could bring wind gusts of 30 to 45 mph, frequent lightning, and pockets of small hail through Monday evening. Areas at elevated risk include Klamath Falls, Grants Pass, and Lakeview.
The agency urges residents to avoid open areas and seek sturdy indoor shelter when thunder is heard. Tents, pavilions, and ridge trails offer little protection against lightning. Drivers should be especially cautious on highways such as U.S. 97 and OR-62, where sudden gusts and low visibility could create hazardous conditions.
Campers and hikers in the Cascades and Siskiyou Mountains are also advised to monitor alerts and have shelter plans in place. Lightning strikes and erratic winds could make high terrain dangerous, particularly during peak afternoon hours.
Thunderstorm chances may continue into Tuesday, and additional updates or advisories are possible.
