Medford, OR – Travelers in Southern Oregon should brace for hazardous conditions as heavy snowfall is forecast through Thursday night on Cascade mountain passes, potentially disrupting holiday plans.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Medford, snowfall is expected to begin late Wednesday night, with elevations above 4,000 feet, including Crater Lake and Diamond Lake, seeing significant accumulation. Advisory or warning-level snowfall is likely in these areas, making travel dangerous for holiday commuters.

In addition to the snow, a Wind Advisory remains in effect Monday for the Rogue Valley, including Medford, Ashland, and Talent. Winds between 20 and 30 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph, are expected until 8 p.m. Monday evening. The gusty conditions could cause downed tree limbs and localized power outages.

Tuesday’s weather will bring additional rain to the valley floor, with snow levels dropping to around 3,700 feet by the evening. Fog may also impact visibility during morning commutes. The forecast through Christmas Day suggests continued chances of rain and showers, with daytime highs in the upper 40s and lows near 40 degrees.

Holiday travelers heading toward the Cascades are urged to check road conditions before departure. Chains or traction tires may be required on mountain passes, and delays are possible. The Oregon Department of Transportation advises using extra caution when driving near exposed ridges or tree-lined routes.
