Pendleton, Ore. – An early-season heat wave could send temperatures soaring into the triple digits across eastern Oregon by Monday, with parts of the Columbia Basin climbing 15 to 20 degrees above average.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, high temperatures this weekend are expected to reach the mid to upper 90s in the Basin, and the low 90s in higher elevation cities. Sunday and Monday are expected to be the hottest days, with the region flirting with the 100-degree mark — weeks ahead of the usual timing.

Hermiston Airport typically sees its first 100°F day around June 28, while Redmond and Pendleton average their first century-mark temperatures in early to mid-July. The Tri-Cities area has historically reached 100°F as early as May 13.

The heat will impact cities from Walla Walla and The Dalles to Yakima and La Grande. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Those without air conditioning should locate local cooling centers or public facilities.

This early spike in temperatures signals a potentially intense start to summer. High heat remains in the forecast through at least Monday, and additional advisories may be issued as conditions evolve.
