Pendleton, Oregon – Dangerously high temperatures are expected to grip Eastern Oregon and Washington from Sunday through Tuesday, with cities like Yakima, Hermiston, and Walla Walla facing a heightened risk of heat-related illness.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Heat Advisory goes into effect Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with highs near 100°F. An Extreme Heat Watch will follow from Sunday evening through Tuesday evening, bringing temperatures as high as 104°F to the Columbia River Gorge, Yakima Valley, and Tri-Cities region.
In Oregon, residents in Boardman, The Dalles, Arlington, and Pendleton are urged to avoid outdoor activity during peak heat hours and check in on vulnerable neighbors. In Washington, cities including Ellensburg, Toppenish, and Prosser could also see sweltering daytime highs with little overnight relief.
Officials advise residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun, and use air conditioning if available. Outdoor workers should take frequent shaded breaks and wear lightweight clothing. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends adjusting schedules to avoid mid-afternoon exposure.
Heat-related illness can escalate quickly. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include dizziness, rapid pulse, and confusion. If untreated, it can progress to life-threatening heat stroke.
Heat alerts remain in effect through Tuesday night, and additional warnings may be issued if conditions worsen.
