Burns, OR – Continued snowmelt and spring precipitation are causing elevated river levels across parts of eastern Oregon, with flood warnings remaining in effect for the Silvies and Malheur rivers.
According to the National Weather Service in Boise, minor flooding is ongoing along the Silvies River near Burns and the Malheur River near Vale. Both rivers are expected to stay above flood stage into next week, with the Silvies River forecast to crest at 14.8 feet Friday night—well above its 12-foot flood stage.
As of 9:30 p.m. MDT Friday, the Malheur River near Vale measured 19.7 feet and is expected to peak around 21 feet by Saturday evening. Flood impacts in Malheur County may include submerged roadways on Copeland Road near Harper and Butte Drive, and overflow along Malheur Drive near the 36th Street Bridge in Ontario. Debris buildup near bridges remains a concern.
Residents are urged to stay alert and avoid driving through flooded roads. “Turn around, don’t drown,” officials warned, noting that most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.
Both warnings will remain in effect until further notice. Additional updates will be provided Saturday afternoon. For real-time alerts and safety information, visit weather.gov.
