Portland, Oregon – Oregonians could catch a rare glimpse of the northern lights tonight as a severe geomagnetic storm brings G4-level conditions to the region, with possible impacts on GPS systems, power grids, and satellite communications through early Monday.

According to the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, the storm reached G4 intensity as of 2:30 a.m. MDT Sunday, triggering alerts for aurora visibility and infrastructure risk. The strongest auroral activity is expected between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m., particularly in areas away from city lights with clear views to the north.

The best chances for viewing extend from Portland to Eugene and along the Cascades, though skies must remain mostly clear. Storm activity may also temporarily affect aviation systems, high-frequency radio, and internet service in some rural areas.

Residents are advised to monitor space weather alerts and limit reliance on GPS for critical navigation tonight. Authorities are coordinating with infrastructure providers to manage potential voltage fluctuations.

The last time Oregon experienced a G4 storm of this strength was in 2015, when auroras reached as far south as Medford.

Warnings remain in effect through Monday morning, and further updates may follow if conditions intensify
