Seattle, WA – A widespread avalanche warning is in effect across western Washington and northern Oregon, placing several popular mountain areas under high alert through 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
According to the Northwest Avalanche Center, very dangerous avalanche conditions have developed due to rain and heavy wet snow overwhelming a previously dry snowpack. The alert spans the west slopes of the Washington Cascades and Mt. Hood in Oregon, covering areas like Mt. Baker, Stevens Pass, Snoqualmie Pass, White Pass, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Saint Helens.
Forecasters expect very large natural avalanches that could reach lower elevations, including openings deep within forested zones. These slides are strong enough to bury, injure, or kill a person and potentially break trees as they descend.
Officials are urging the public to avoid all avalanche-prone zones, including those well below steep alpine slopes. This includes commonly traveled backcountry routes, ski areas, and forest clearings.
The warning remains active until 6:30 p.m. PDT Sunday. Residents and outdoor recreationists are strongly encouraged to check updated avalanche forecasts at www.nwac.us or www.avalanche.org before heading into affected areas.
Similar hazards may exist outside the official warning zones.
