Omaha, Nebraska – Scattered flash flooding could disrupt travel and impact homes across eastern Nebraska and surrounding states tonight as slow-moving thunderstorms bring intense rainfall to the region.

According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center, storms developing along a cold front will dump 1 to 2 inches of rain per hour, with isolated storm totals reaching up to 5 inches. A “Slight Risk” of excessive rainfall has been issued for much of Nebraska, including Omaha, Lincoln, and Kearney, extending into parts of South Dakota, Iowa, and Kansas.

The heaviest rain is expected this evening through the overnight hours. Localized flash flooding is possible in low-lying areas, along smaller streams, and across urban roadways — especially where drainage is limited. U.S. Highways 6 and 77, along with sections of I-80, could see hazardous driving conditions if water pools on pavement.

Residents are urged to stay alert for flood advisories and warnings. Have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts, avoid driving on flooded roads, and remember the safety message: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

More showers may linger into Tuesday morning, and additional alerts could be issued if rainfall persists.
