OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – Residents across central and western Oklahoma are on alert for severe thunderstorms overnight, with the potential for damaging winds and large hail as a line of storms moves through the state. The activity is expected to continue through the pre-dawn hours, creating hazardous conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Norman, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 6 a.m. CDT for 21 counties. The watch area includes a large swath of the state, encompassing major population centers such as Oklahoma City, Norman, Moore, Edmond, Stillwater, and Enid.
Counties under the watch include Oklahoma, Cleveland, Canadian, Payne, Logan, and Pottawatomie in the central region, extending west to Woodward, Custer, and Blaine counties. Forecasters are tracking storms capable of producing hail large enough to damage vehicles and wind gusts strong enough to cause harm to roofs, siding, and trees.
Officials advise residents to secure loose outdoor furniture and objects. Drivers on major corridors like I-35, I-40, and I-44 should be prepared for sudden dangerous travel conditions. It is recommended to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts overnight, as a watch means conditions are favorable for severe storms to develop.
The watch is scheduled to remain in place until early Sunday morning. Residents should stay vigilant for any warnings that may be issued for their specific location.
