Tulsa, Oklahoma – Severe thunderstorms are expected to redevelop across eastern Oklahoma Thursday [DAY], threatening the Tulsa metro with 60 mph wind gusts, heavy downpours, and lightning during the evening commute. Localized flooding is possible, especially along low-lying areas and heavily trafficked routes like U.S. 64 and I-244.

According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, a series of storm systems will move across the region beginning late Thursday afternoon. Rain chances climb sharply into Thursday night, with the heaviest rainfall and strongest storms anticipated between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Showers and storms may linger into Friday morning, with another round of thunderstorms possible after 10 a.m. Friday. Some areas could receive more than an inch of rainfall through Friday, particularly in parts of Tulsa, Muskogee, and McIntosh counties. The NWS warns that repeated rounds of rain could increase the flash flood potential.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads and to allow extra time for delays on major corridors. Charge mobile devices in advance and secure outdoor items that could blow away in strong winds.

Wednesday offers a brief break with mostly cloudy skies and highs in the low 70s before the storm threat ramps up.

More storms are possible Sunday into Monday, with significant rainfall totals expected through early next week.
