Tulsa, Oklahoma – Strong winds and hail could impact drivers and residents across southeast Oklahoma early Friday as a round of severe thunderstorms rolls in overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Tulsa, a marginal risk for severe weather will take shape after midnight Thursday and continue into Friday morning, mainly affecting southeast Oklahoma and west-central Arkansas. Wind gusts could peak between 60 and 70 mph, and hail as large as ping pong balls is possible. While tornado potential remains nil, damaging winds and heavy rainfall are the main concerns.

Cities including McAlester, Poteau, and Hugo may see the strongest storms during the early morning commute. Areas further north, including Tulsa and Muskogee, remain under a lower-end threat but could still experience brief downpours and gusty winds. Power outages and minor tree damage are possible in the hardest-hit regions.

Drivers are urged to avoid travel during peak storm hours if possible and secure loose outdoor items. Emergency managers recommend reviewing shelter plans and staying weather-aware overnight.

This storm system is expected to move out of the area by mid-morning Friday, but additional rounds of rain could develop later in the weekend. Weather alerts remain in effect through 7 a.m. Friday.
