Amarillo, Texas – Heavy rain sweeping across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles is raising flood concerns through Tuesday night, with road washouts and flooded low-water crossings possible from Amarillo to Guymon.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a Flood Watch remains in effect until 10 p.m. CDT for a wide stretch of the region, including Randall, Potter, Gray, Lipscomb, and Cimarron counties. Multiple rounds of rain may lead to excessive runoff, with urban areas and poor-drainage zones especially vulnerable.
Residents in Amarillo, Canyon, Borger, and Canadian are urged to avoid driving through flooded roads and monitor updates throughout the day. In rural areas like Palo Duro Canyon and along US-87 and I-40, rapidly rising water could impact travel and outdoor activities. Local officials recommend charging cell phones, checking sump pumps, and having sandbags ready if in flood-prone zones.
This is the third consecutive day of heavy rainfall for parts of the Panhandle, pushing some streams and creeks near flood stage. Rainfall totals of 1–3 inches have already been reported in spots like Dumas and Shamrock.
Flooding risks will taper off tonight, but more rain may return later this week. Stay alert for upgraded Flood Warnings as the situation develops.
