Louisville, KY – A major winter storm is battering the Ohio Valley today, bringing freezing rain, heavy snow, and treacherous travel conditions. Local residents should prepare for significant power outages and dangerous roads through Monday.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), freezing rain began early Sunday morning across the region and will intensify later today. Kentucky and southern Indiana are expected to see the highest impacts, with up to 8 inches of snow in northern areas and ice accumulations reaching three-quarters of an inch in southern regions. Major roadways like I-65 and I-64 could become impassable due to slick ice and low visibility.
Emergency management officials are urging drivers to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary and to carry emergency kits if venturing out. “Conditions will worsen throughout the day,” the NWS stated, “with freezing rain creating hazardous power line and tree conditions.”
By Monday morning, central Ohio Valley areas, including Lexington and Madison, Indiana, will experience a wintry mix of snow and freezing rain. Meanwhile, the southern Ohio Valley will likely face the brunt of ice-related power outages.
Temperatures will remain near freezing throughout the storm, worsening icy conditions. Looking ahead, cold air will linger, with highs barely reaching the 30s through midweek. A second system later this week could bring additional snow and icy conditions.
