Columbus, Ohio – Expect slower commutes and poor breathing conditions across Central Ohio Tuesday as storms move in and air quality deteriorates.

According to the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, an Air Quality Alert remains in effect until midnight Monday for Franklin, Delaware, Fairfield, and Licking counties. Fine particulate levels are in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range. Children, seniors, and anyone with asthma or respiratory conditions should stay indoors as much as possible.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service says showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop by 11 a.m. Tuesday, with peak storm activity between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. in Columbus, Newark, and Lancaster. Motorists traveling along I-70 and I-71 should anticipate reduced visibility and slick pavement during the evening rush. Rainfall totals could exceed a quarter inch, with isolated thunderstorms delivering more.

Tuesday night will clear gradually, with lows dipping to 58°F under mostly clear skies.

While Wednesday and Thursday bring sunshine and warmer temps — climbing to 86°F — showers return by Friday, starting a wet weekend stretch. Now is a good time to clean gutters, secure outdoor items, and prepare for more unsettled weather.

Warnings remain possible later in the week as rain chances stay elevated through Sunday.
