As December kicks off on Monday, Cleveland, Ohio, is about to feel the full force of winter’s early bite. A moderate snowstorm is expected to hit by Sunday night, bringing the potential for up to 3 inches of snow by Monday morning. While temperatures will stay in the mid-30s throughout the weekend, the first winter storm of the season will make travel conditions hazardous, especially as the snow starts falling overnight into Monday.

If you’re traveling this weekend or early next week, make sure to plan for delays on I-80 and other major routes. Snow accumulation will likely cause slick roads and reduce visibility for drivers. Light to moderate snow accumulations are possible, particularly to the southeast of Cleveland, as low pressure moves into the region. Keep an eye out for rain mixing with snow by Sunday evening, but this will quickly change over to all snow overnight as temperatures fall into the low 30s.

Prepare for a sharp drop in temperatures come Monday. With snow accumulation likely, be ready for wind gusts up to 25 mph that will make the air feel much colder than the actual temperature. The National Weather Service warns that snow could cause travel disruptions, especially on I-90 and other nearby roads. Plan for an extra 30 minutes to an hour of travel time if you’re heading out on Monday morning.

As we look ahead, snow could return mid-week, with temperatures continuing to hover near freezing or dip lower as we approach Wednesday. This will likely lead to additional hazardous travel and potentially even more snow.
