Pittsburgh, PA – Residents across southwest Pennsylvania and southeast Ohio should prepare for heavy rain and localized flooding Monday afternoon as a stalled cold front sets up over the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, the slow-moving front may trigger “training” thunderstorms—multiple rounds of rain over the same area—which raises the risk of flash flooding from Monday afternoon into the evening. The Weather Prediction Center has issued a Level 1 (Marginal) flood threat for the region, including Pittsburgh, Youngstown, Wheeling, and Zanesville.

The potential for excessive rainfall spans from southeast Ohio into southwest Pennsylvania and portions of northern West Virginia. While widespread severe storms are not expected, any stronger cell could generate gusty winds up to 40 mph. Forecasters urge residents to monitor local alerts and ensure devices are set to receive watches and warnings.

Urban low-lying areas, such as Route 22 near Murrysville and I-376 through Pittsburgh, could be especially vulnerable to quick water buildup. Drivers should avoid flooded roadways and use caution during evening commutes.

The flooding threat may persist through Monday night. Additional updates are expected by late Monday morning as rainfall totals become clearer.
