Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – More than 8 million residents across 40 counties in Ohio and Pennsylvania are under a severe thunderstorm watch until 10 p.m. Monday, as powerful storms capable of 70 mph wind gusts and large hail threaten the region.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch zone includes major population centers such as Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Akron, and New Philadelphia. Counties at risk include Allegheny, Butler, Erie, Cuyahoga, Franklin, Stark, and Washington. Scattered damaging wind gusts and ping pong ball-sized hail could impact homes, vehicles, and power lines throughout the evening.

Storms are expected to arrive in waves, with bowing thunderstorm lines forming along I-70, I-76, and I-80. The NWS warns of frequent lightning, isolated hail up to 1.5 inches, and the potential for brief power outages and fallen tree limbs. Emergency officials recommend securing outdoor furniture, charging devices, and remaining indoors during active storms.

This is the first widespread severe thunderstorm watch for the Ohio–Pennsylvania corridor in June, with over 2,700 schools and 194 hospitals in the alert zone. Stay alert and be ready to take shelter if warnings are issued.

Severe weather alerts remain in effect until 10 p.m. EDT. Further updates may follow if storm intensity increases.
