Cleveland, Ohio – Sunny skies and nearly flat waves will greet beachgoers across the Lake Erie shoreline today, with water temperatures in the 70s and a very high UV index prompting sun safety warnings.
According to the National Weather Service Cleveland, west to southwest winds of 10 mph or less will keep wave heights under one foot throughout Saturday, July 5. This calm pattern results in a low risk of rip currents across all Ohio shoreline areas, from Maumee Bay to Conneaut.
Inland temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-80s by mid-afternoon, with the hottest readings near Vermilion, Avon Point, and the Lake Erie Islands. Locations like Geneva-on-the-Lake, Willowick, and Conneaut will see similar warmth, peaking around 83–85°F between 3 and 6 p.m.
Though lake conditions are ideal for boating, swimming, and paddling, the very high UV index means sunscreen, hats, and shade breaks are essential. Prolonged sun exposure could lead to sunburn within 15 minutes.
Conditions are expected to remain stable through the evening, with no wave or wind advisories in effect. Swimmers should continue to monitor local beach flags and weather updates at weather.gov/cle.
