Columbus, Ohio – Heat index values will soar past 100°F across much of central and southern Ohio today, with the added threat of isolated damaging winds and flash flooding from slow-moving storms.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, heat index values could climb as high as 105°F in parts of Cincinnati, Hillsboro, and Portsmouth through 8 p.m. Thursday. A Level 1 severe weather risk remains in effect across central Ohio, including Columbus, Dayton, and Chillicothe, with pop-up thunderstorms expected this afternoon and evening.

Localized flooding is possible in low-lying or poorly drained areas, particularly if storms stall over one region. Cities like Wilmington, Washington Court House, and Circleville are also at risk for short-lived but intense rainfall, gusty winds, and heat-related illnesses. Emergency managers urge residents to limit outdoor activities, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors.

This heat event follows a week of rising humidity and minimal overnight relief. High temperatures and high dew points will continue to push the heat index to dangerous levels, especially in urban areas and near pavement.

Scattered storms could redevelop by early evening. Additional weather advisories may be issued throughout the day.
