Cleveland, Ohio – Severe weather is expected to rattle northeast Ohio Monday afternoon, with strong thunderstorms and a flood risk targeting the Cleveland metro and I-77 corridor by 2 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, showers and thunderstorms will intensify Monday, June 9, with a 90% chance of rain after noon. Some storms may be strong to severe, producing damaging wind gusts and localized flooding. Rainfall totals could exceed a half-inch in isolated pockets, especially from Akron northward to Ashtabula.

High confidence surrounds storm development east of I-71, particularly from Wooster to Mount Vernon and into Lake and Geauga counties. Cleveland, Parma, and Mentor residents should prepare for potential power outages, ponding on roads, and delays along I-90, I-271, and I-480.

Monday night, storms will continue before tapering off around 2 a.m. Tuesday. Winds could gust up to 30 mph during the evening hours. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and avoid travel during peak storm activity.

While Tuesday offers partial clearing and a drier day, another round of showers is possible after 2 p.m. Beyond that, the forecast trends warm and sunny:

  • Wednesday [June 11]: Sunny, high near 86°F
  • Thursday [June 12]: Mostly sunny, high near 86°F
  • Friday [June 13]: Chance of storms returns, high near 80°F
  • Saturday [June 14]: Isolated storms likely, high near 78°F
