Minneapolis, MN – Dry air and warm temperatures are creating near-critical fire weather conditions across much of Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin Thursday, raising the risk of fast-spreading grass or brush fires.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Duluth and the Twin Cities, minimum relative humidity values will drop as low as 15% in areas including Duluth, Hibbing, and Grand Rapids, with similar readings near the Twin Cities and Rice Lake, Wisconsin. Winds are expected to be light—generally 5 to 10 mph—but even minor gusts combined with dry grasses could trigger dangerous fire conditions.

In northeast Minnesota, where vegetation remains dry, officials urge residents from International Falls to Hinckley to avoid outdoor burning. The Wisconsin DNR has also issued advisories for counties including Polk, Barron, and Sawyer. Burn permits may be suspended, and fire restrictions are in place across multiple counties.

Residents are encouraged to delay yard waste burns, avoid campfires, and refrain from using fire pits or grills near dry grass. With warm temperatures near 70°F expected this afternoon, the risk will remain elevated into the evening hours.

More updates may follow if conditions worsen or winds increase. Outdoor burning should be postponed until humidity rises or local officials lift restrictions.
