Jayton, Texas – Flash flooding is underway in Kent County early Tuesday after powerful thunderstorms dropped up to 3 inches of rain near Clairemont overnight, prompting emergency alerts and dangerous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, a Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 3:30 a.m. CDT for central Kent County. Radar indicated heavy rain began falling before 2 a.m., with as much as 2 inches across the area and higher totals reported just north of Clairemont. Additional rainfall of 1 to 2 inches is possible through the early morning hours.

Flooding is expected to impact low-lying areas, creeks, underpasses, and rural roads. Residents in Jayton and Clairemont should avoid all flooded roadways, especially in areas with limited visibility overnight. Emergency officials urge drivers to stay off backroads and turn around if water is covering pavement.

The National Weather Service advises extreme caution during nighttime flooding events when hazards are harder to spot. This is the most significant flash flood event for Kent County so far this month.

Flash Flood Warnings remain active through 3:30 a.m. CDT. More alerts may be issued if rainfall continues.
