Chicago, IL – The first significant snowfall of the 2024-25 winter season blanketed Chicago and northwest Indiana Thursday. Snowfall totals reached up to 4.5 inches, creating travel disruptions.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), most of the snow fell in a concentrated 2-4 hour period mid-morning Thursday. Areas including DeMotte, Indiana, recorded the highest totals at 4.5 inches, while parts of Chicago saw up to 3.9 inches. Heaviest accumulations occurred in localized areas southeast of the metro.

Officials reported difficult driving conditions Thursday afternoon as snow continued into the early hours. Chicago’s O’Hare Airport recorded 2.9 inches, while Midway measured 2.5 inches. Snow showers Wednesday night had already created icy surfaces across the region.

The NWS said this snowfall marked the season’s first accumulation, with winter storm impacts expected to increase in coming weeks. Meteorologists encourage residents to prepare for colder weather and monitor future forecasts.

Localized totals above 4 inches in darker blue zones indicate future storms could hit these areas hardest. Commuters should remain vigilant during winter travel.
