Northern U.S. residents may witness a dazzling display of the aurora borealis tonight. Areas across several northern states could experience the phenomenon, which occurs due to geomagnetic activity in the Earth’s atmosphere.

According to the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, tonight’s aurora forecast predicts a Kp index of 4, placing the auroral oval within reach of northern parts of the U.S. Those living in states like Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin could have the best chance to see the lights. The optimal time for viewing will be between sunset and just before sunrise, depending on cloud coverage.

Viewers are encouraged to find a dark, clear area away from city lights for the best visibility. The aurora is forecasted to fade just before dawn, but those in affected regions should still check weather updates to optimize their chances.

Tomorrow night, the aurora is expected to shift, with a diminished likelihood in the northern U.S. but still visible in areas close to the northern border.
