Cleveland, OH – Northern Ohio residents are gearing up for a dangerous winter storm beginning this evening and lasting through Friday. A strong arctic front will sweep through the area, bringing gusty winds, lake-effect snow, and hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service, wind gusts could reach up to 45 mph, with localized gusts near 50 mph along Lake Erie’s shores. Wind chills are expected to plummet into the single digits overnight, increasing the risk of frostbite for those outdoors without proper precautions. Snowfall rates could exceed 1 inch per hour, with totals ranging from 5-8 inches across northern Ohio counties and up to 18 inches in northwest Pennsylvania.
Lake effect snow is forecasted to intensify by Thursday morning, impacting primary and secondary snow belts. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Lorain, Cuyahoga, and Mahoning counties from 4 p.m. today through 4 a.m. Friday. Additionally, gale warnings are active across Lake Erie, posing risks to mariners and causing water levels in the western basin to drop quickly.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, as visibility could fall to a quarter mile in heavy squalls. Drivers should use extreme caution on I-90 and other major roadways, where icy patches and drifting snow could lead to accidents.
Looking ahead, frigid conditions will persist through the weekend, with temperatures staying below freezing and periodic snow showers continuing. Stay updated by monitoring the latest alerts from the National Weather Service and local officials.
