Oswego, NY – Northern New York is bracing for a significant winter storm that could bring up to a foot of snow, freezing rain, and dangerous travel conditions through Sunday evening.

According to the National Weather Service, a Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect for Oswego County until 1 a.m. Saturday, with 6 to 12 inches of additional snow expected in persistent lake-effect bands. A Winter Storm Watch will take effect Saturday afternoon for Oswego, Jefferson, and Lewis counties, bringing the potential for heavy mixed precipitation. Forecasts indicate more than 6 inches of snow and sleet, with up to a quarter-inch of ice accumulation. Wind gusts could reach 35 mph, further reducing visibility and causing hazardous road conditions.

Travel could be extremely difficult, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses. Officials warn of slick conditions during Friday’s commutes, with worsening weather expected over the weekend.

Residents should prepare for possible power outages due to ice buildup and stay updated on forecast changes. Authorities advise avoiding unnecessary travel and reporting snowfall and ice accumulation via social media or the NWS website.
