Gaylord, MI – Freezing rain and mixed precipitation are creating hazardous driving conditions across Northern Michigan this morning, prompting warnings for drivers to exercise caution. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory through 1 p.m. Sunday, with untreated roads expected to remain icy.
According to the National Weather Service, freezing drizzle and light snow began early Sunday morning, leading to slippery roads and reduced visibility. Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by midday, transitioning the freezing rain into light drizzle and improving conditions. Highs today will hover between 35°F to 40°F, offering some relief for travelers later in the day.
Drivers are urged to take precautions when traveling, especially on untreated roadways and bridges, which freeze more quickly. Windshield fog and icy patches may persist into the morning, particularly along major routes like I-75 and nearby rural roads in Otsego County.
Looking ahead, Monday brings a warmer start to the week with cloudy skies and a chance of rain showers in the afternoon. High temperatures will reach the low-to-mid 40s. By Monday night, rain could mix with snow, leading to minor accumulations.
The five-day outlook shows a mix of winter conditions and a brief warm-up. Tuesday will be mostly cloudy, with highs near 34°F. Snow showers are likely to return Tuesday night into Wednesday, when temperatures will fall back to the low 30s. The midweek period will see scattered snow showers, with lingering icy conditions possible through Thursday.
Residents should monitor updates and prepare for rapidly changing road conditions throughout the week. Officials encourage using caution while traveling and keeping emergency supplies in vehicles.
