Gaylord, MI – Snow and dense fog are expected to create hazardous travel conditions across northern Michigan starting today and continuing into New Year’s Eve. Localized snowfall of 2 to 4 inches and visibility reduced to a quarter of a mile or less may make roadways treacherous, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
The snow is set to intensify after 5 p.m. today, with rain transitioning to snow as temperatures drop. The forecast predicts up to 2 inches of snow accumulation tonight, accompanied by gusty winds of up to 30 mph. Foggy conditions will persist into Monday morning, particularly along key roadways like I-75 and US-131. Drivers are advised to slow down, use headlights, and leave extra space between vehicles.
New Year’s Eve travelers should brace for additional snow showers expected Tuesday night into Wednesday. Daytime highs will hover in the low 30s, but wind chills will make it feel colder. By New Year’s Day, snow is likely, with another round of accumulation possible.
Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to plunge later in the week, with highs struggling to surpass the mid-20s and overnight lows dipping into the teens. Wednesday and Thursday bring continued chances of snow showers, creating additional challenges for post-holiday travelers.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather updates and prepare for slick, icy roads. “Take extra time to reach your destination and ensure vehicles are equipped for winter driving,” the NWS advised.
