Caribou, Maine – Northern Maine residents should brace for possible thunderstorms and gusty winds tonight as a strong cold front pushes through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a band of rain showers will develop late Tuesday and continue into the evening, with the best chance for thunder north of Katahdin. Breezy southerly winds this afternoon will shift northwest overnight, with gusts reaching 35 mph—and up to 40 mph in higher elevations. Temperatures will drop sharply by Wednesday morning, with highs only in the 40s across the north and 50s Down East.

Communities from Presque Isle to Fort Kent may hear rumbles of thunder by midnight, while Millinocket and Lincoln could see quick-moving downpours. Drivers are advised to watch for slick roads, especially during early morning commutes. Power outages are possible where winds are strongest.

Today’s high temperatures will reach the low to mid-70s inland before falling quickly overnight. Residents should secure outdoor items and limit travel in wind-prone areas. The storm system will exit by dawn Wednesday, leaving behind a colder, breezy day.

Warnings remain in effect until early Wednesday. More rain is expected Friday, especially across northern Maine.
