Aurora watchers are in for a treat this Saturday night as the Northern Lights are forecasted to appear across select northern U.S. states. The phenomenon, known as the aurora borealis, will be visible from northern regions, particularly where the skies remain clear.
According to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, areas experiencing the strongest geomagnetic activity may see the lights between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Central Time. Residents in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan may have the best chance of spotting the colorful display in the northern horizon.
While the auroras may not be directly overhead, the lights can still be seen up to 1,000 km away if conditions are right. Skywatchers are encouraged to check local forecasts for clear skies and head to areas with minimal light pollution. For more accurate viewing updates, NOAA provides a real-time aurora dashboard.
Saturday night’s show is expected to feature vibrant colors as part of a geomagnetic event forecasted to reach a Kp index of 4.
