Boulder, CO – Northern lights could illuminate skies across the Midwest during Thanksgiving and Black Friday due to a geomagnetic storm.
The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center issued a G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm watch for Thursday, Nov. 28, and a G2 (Moderate) watch for Friday, Nov. 29. These storms are linked to a coronal mass ejection (CME) that erupted from the Sun on Nov. 25.
According to NOAA, auroras may become visible over northern states, stretching from New York to Idaho, depending on local weather conditions. The storm’s intensity will peak late Thanksgiving night into Friday. The enhanced geomagnetic activity could also cause minor disruptions to satellite systems and power grids.
Midwestern states, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, could offer prime viewing opportunities for the northern lights. NOAA encourages stargazers to seek dark, open areas away from city lights for the best experience.
Updates on aurora activity are available through NOAA’s online resources and social media channels. Clear skies and proper timing may reward observers with breathtaking displays during the holiday weekend.
