The Northern Lights are expected to dazzle skywatchers from New York to Washington state Thursday night. Cities like Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, the Twin Cities, and Spokane are among those with a chance to see the aurora. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center forecasts geomagnetic conditions could push the aurora borealis further south than usual.
According to NOAA, Thursday’s Kp index of 6 indicates strong solar winds, which may allow the Northern Lights to stretch across much of the U.S. Those in the northern states, from New York through the Midwest and into Washington, may see vibrant colors lighting up the sky, including shades of green, red, and purple.
For the best viewing experience, skywatchers should seek dark, rural locations away from city lights. The aurora could appear as early as 9 p.m. local time, and clear skies will enhance visibility. Cities such as Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, and Spokane are forecasted to be within the auroral zone.
While space weather predictions can change, NOAA recommends staying updated via their Aurora Dashboard for real-time viewing conditions. Don’t miss this chance to catch a rare nationwide aurora display.
