Des Moines, Iowa – Scattered thunderstorms could disrupt travel and outdoor plans across Iowa today, especially along the Highway 20 corridor, as isolated severe storms bring the threat of damaging winds and hail through tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather remains in place across much of central and northern Iowa. Storms are expected to continue through 10 a.m. Wednesday, with a second round redeveloping after 5 p.m. and continuing into the night. Primary hazards include winds up to 60 mph, penny-sized hail, and locally heavy rainfall.

Cities including Fort Dodge, Waterloo, Mason City, and Cedar Rapids could see brief downpours and gusty winds during peak commute times. While flash flooding is not expected, visibility may be reduced during heavier showers, and ponding on roads is possible.

Residents are advised to monitor multiple weather alerts and stay indoors during storms. If traveling, use caution and avoid flooded roads. The severe threat diminishes by Thursday, with conditions drying out west to east and highs warming into the 70s across Iowa.

Further updates may be issued later today as storms redevelop this evening.
