South Bend, Ind. – Scattered thunderstorms could bring lightning, small hail, and wind gusts up to 40 mph across northwest Indiana Sunday evening, with the strongest storms expected between 6 and 9 p.m. along and west of US-31.
According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, the most intense activity will track near cities like Gary, Valparaiso, and South Bend before weakening after sunset as storms shift eastward. The severe weather risk remains low overall (Level 1 out of 5), but brief heavy rain and isolated downed branches are possible in stronger cells.
Key travel corridors including US-31, I-94, and portions of I-65 may experience reduced visibility and slick roads during the evening commute. Frequent lightning could pose danger to outdoor events or activities, particularly near La Porte, Knox, and Rochester.
Residents are urged to delay non-essential travel during peak storm hours and secure loose outdoor items. While power outages are not widespread, isolated flickers may occur where gusty winds coincide with lightning strikes.
Storms are forecast to lose strength as they approach Fort Wayne and northeast Indiana after dark. Additional updates or advisories may be issued if conditions intensify.
