Fort Wayne, IN – Northern Indiana residents should prepare for dangerously cold temperatures and snowfall starting Sunday night, with wind chills plummeting as low as -25°F. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Extreme Cold Watch for the region, in effect from Sunday evening through Wednesday morning.

The arctic blast will begin Sunday night as temperatures drop to single digits. Wind gusts up to 25 mph will create subzero wind chills that could cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes. Monday will see daytime highs near 8°F, with wind chills between -15°F and -25°F. The cold continues through Tuesday and Wednesday, with highs struggling to reach the teens and overnight lows dipping to -7°F.

Light snow showers are expected Saturday night into Sunday morning, with up to 1 inch of accumulation possible. Additional lake-effect snow may develop late Sunday into Monday, particularly in areas near Lake Michigan, with localized accumulations of up to 4 inches. Roadways, including I-69, could become slick, and visibility may be reduced during snow showers. Drivers should proceed with caution and allow extra time for travel.

Residents are urged to take precautions against the cold, including wearing layers, hats, gloves, and face masks if venturing outdoors. Ensure pets have adequate shelter and avoid prolonged exposure to freezing conditions. Homes should be prepared for the extreme cold, with proper insulation and emergency supplies on hand.

Looking ahead, conditions will remain bitterly cold through midweek before a slight warming trend begins Thursday. Highs are expected to return to the 20s by the end of the week, but wind chills will still make it feel significantly colder.
