Fort Wayne, IN – Northern Indiana is gearing up for a dangerous Arctic blast this weekend, with plunging temperatures and lake effect snow expected to impact the region. Rain tonight will transition to light snow by Saturday morning, potentially creating icy roads and hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will drop sharply on Saturday, falling into the 20s by afternoon. Winds gusting up to 20 mph could lead to areas of refreezing, particularly on bridges and overpasses along major routes like I-69 and US-30. By Sunday, wind chills will fall to -5°F, making outdoor activities risky.

Lake effect snow is likely to develop Sunday into early next week as Arctic air settles across the region. Monday’s wind chills could plummet further, reaching as low as -20°F. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, check on vulnerable neighbors, and prepare their homes for prolonged freezing temperatures.

Drivers should plan for slower travel times and monitor updates as conditions evolve. Officials recommend keeping an emergency kit in vehicles, including blankets, water, and a flashlight.
