Fort Wayne, IN – Northern Indiana is gearing up for a prolonged cold snap and snow that could disrupt travel along major routes like US-30 this week. Residents can expect frequent single-digit wind chills, lake-effect snow, and a potential winter system moving in by Friday.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Northern Indiana, light snow will begin Wednesday afternoon, with lake-effect snow showers continuing into the evening. Thursday will bring a brief lull, but temperatures will struggle to rise above the mid-20s. By Friday, a light snow system could drop one to two inches across the region, creating slick travel conditions along highways and local streets.

Wind chills will remain a primary concern, frequently dipping into the single digits overnight. Friday night could see lows in the teens, with breezy conditions making it feel even colder. The NWS advises motorists to use caution, especially during early morning commutes when visibility may be reduced due to snow showers.

The extended forecast shows the bitter cold persisting into next week, with highs in the teens expected by Tuesday. A second lake-effect snow event could develop Sunday night into Monday, further complicating travel along major thoroughfares like US-24 and I-69.

Residents should take precautions to stay safe during this cold stretch. Wear layers when outside, check on vulnerable neighbors, and ensure vehicles are winter-ready. Those traveling should monitor weather updates and be prepared for icy road conditions.

Stay tuned for more weather updates as conditions evolve.
