South Bend, IN – Residents across northern Indiana and southern Michigan should prepare for lake effect snow overnight and windy conditions Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), scattered snow showers will develop late Wednesday evening, primarily impacting grassy areas with light accumulations under an inch by morning. However, widespread snowfall on Thursday may lead to slushy accumulations of 1 to 3 inches. Motorists could encounter slick roads and reduced visibility during peak snowfall periods from late morning through the afternoon.
The NWS also warns of strong west-to-southwest winds gusting up to 35 mph on Thursday. This combination of snow and wind could further complicate travel, especially during the busiest commute hours.
Temperatures hovering near freezing and initially warm ground conditions create uncertainty about how much snow will stick to roadways. By Thursday evening, snow is expected to transition to rain, easing travel conditions overnight.
Authorities urge residents to stay alert to changing conditions and monitor weather updates. Travelers should allow extra time and exercise caution on slick roads, especially in areas affected by heavier snow bands.
